This Goes Out To All My Side Seats

There are seats designed so that you can have it all. (Ahem, HAG Capisco, you active-office man-made miracle, you.) And, maybe it's because bad habits die hard, but if I'm being totally honest, I tend to stay in the same position when utilizing all-in-one chairs. Switching up my seat-of-the-moment encourages so much more movement. So, here are my rounded-base suggestions for when you have your main seat, but you need a seat on the side:

Interstuhl UPis1

So far, my fave way to use this side seat is as a way to take a break from standing but also to stay moving and I mean dancing. I can pop, lock and drop it since the Interstuhl is equipped with a curved base for easy movement and a pull tab for smooth height adjustability. When I choose to stand up, I literally put this stool to the side and use it as a temporary end table. A seat and a table? Let's call this a 'Two for Won' - amIrite?!?!

  • Height: Adjusts from 17.5 to 25 inches
  • Weight: 10 lbs
  • Seat Style: Soft seat inlay

Ongo Classic

So here's the deal, active seating totally engages your core. I have yet to come across another comfy side stool that reminds me to stay engaged and to keep moving the way Ongo does. One word: marbles. It's a simple concept, really; when you move, the marbles will roll around the carved-out track in the base. An audible reminder to just keep moving and when you're ready to lose those training wheels, the marbles pop right out.

  • Height: Adjusts from 21.5 to 30 inches
  • Weight: 12.5 lbs
  • Seat Style: Circular seat shaped like a mushroom cap

Cleverly named to rhyme with 'pogo,' this stool stick is a helluva lot comfier to sit on than some might think at first glance. This seat is designed to never leave your side. Since it can be used in-or-outside, I bring it with both to the office and out to the Ergo Depot softball games. This ingenious, lightweight contraption easily breaks down to a transportable size, yet is sturdy enough to keep me propped up when I need a break from standing at my adjustable-height desk. Plus, the seat is shaped like a Ninja Turtle's mask - bonus points!

  • Height: Adjusts from 18 to 38 inches
  • Weight: 2.1 lbs
  • Seat Style: Soft shell Ninja Turtle mask (aka comfort cushion) available in black or red

Balls were made to bounce and Ballos were made to bounce on. Whether it's swaying from side to side or just to keep on bouncing, this modern-day yoga ball inspires movement! One thing this side seat has on it's round counterparts is that when you stand up, it won't roll away. The design makes it look like an apple core, which helps to keep the Ballo behind my desk. But when I do want to move it, the inlaid notches underneath the seat make for straightforward haulage. Not to mention, with seven different color options, this makes for a prime accessory seat.

  • Height: Fixed height of 24.5 inches
  • Weight: 14.5 lbs
  • Seat Style: Air-filled non-slip dome

Move Stool

Move, task chair; get out the way. It's time to mobilize your core 360° by tilting on the Move Stool's slightly curved base. And, this side stool is equipped with an uber comfy saddle seat, which opens the hips, strengthens the back and helps to develop proper posture. Not too shabby for when you're taking a break from your main seat.

  • Height: Adjusts from 22 to 32.3 inches
  • Weight: 14 lbs
  • Seat Style: Padded saddle with wool-blend upholstery options

For reference, the Swopper Classic is another magical option, but not what I'd call a "side seat."

Stay movin',
Jen M.
